Audio Production

HANJO by Toshio Hosokawa (excerpt)

This project was commissioned by Catapult Opera, and was the recipient of its innovation prize. It involved the recording of a scene from Toshio Hosokawa’s opera Hanjo in which the parts of the vocal performers were played by shadow puppets. The piano parts were engineered to mimic orchestral sounds. Piano and orchestration by Brendan Nguyen, sung by baritone Jonathan Nussman and mezzo-soprano Leslie Ann Leytham. Audio mixing, editing and engineering by Joe Cantrell. Video editing by Joe Cantrell.

These recordings are a sampling of many that were made at the University of San Diego in 2017. They all captured live concerts, and were engineered in part by students in the concert production class under my guidance.

Interactive Audio Production

This piece gives an example of interactive and reactive software-based skills. The piece was composed and programmed for CALIT2’s immersive screen and surround sound system. It utilized live data collection from internet video sources and translated them into text-based imagery and sound that reacted to the data accumulated.
